Turn the doorknob to open the door and gain access to the room. A ballpoint pen filler works. At an inch or so you will feel resistance. It s called a privacy lock.

Then turn the door knob and shake the pin which should cause the lock to open. Push it straight into the hole. This is designed as an emergency way to open interior doors with locks such as a bathroom or bedroom door. When the door unlocks on the other side you should hear the click.

When you feel the resistance move and hear a click or more of a clunk the door will be open. Turning clockwise usually unlocks the lock but if that doesn t work turn it counterclockwise. To unlock the door simply insert the key or other tool into the pinhole in the doorknob and push it straight in until you contact the release button. Keep pushing hard enough to move the resistance.

To open a locked bathroom door from the outside place the point of a butter knife into the keyhole if it s a push button lock and turn the knife sideways. Step 2 push the door so that the gap between the doorframe and the locked door is as wide as possible. Rotate the key until it fits into the slot in the button then turn the key just like turning a screw. Grasp the doorknob firmly in your non dominant hand if you are right handed hold it with your left hand.

With the twist lock turn the screwdriver. If this doesn t work put a straightened out bobby pin into the lock.
